What Do Bed Bugs Look Like
The common variety is a small nocturnal insect that feeds on the blood of humans and are at near epidemic proportions across the country. The numbers of reported infestations has skyrocketed in recent years.
The problem is that they are small, 1/8 to 1/5 inch or less, and are nocturnal. They are flat and can hide in your carpet, seams of your mattress and in cracks or corners of wooden furniture. They can travel between apartments or condos along pipes or wires. They only come out at night to feed, usually in the hours just before dawn. So unless you turn a light on during the night or go looking for their hiding places you might not ever see them. But they have been known to feed at any time given the opportunity.
They are attracted by body warmth and the presence of carbon dioxide. They pierce the skin with two tiny hollow tubes, one to inject it’s saliva which contains anti coagulants, and one to suck the blood from their victim. They feed for about five minutes then return to their hiding place.
Although bed bugs can live for as much as a year without feeding by going dormant they will typically try to feed every five to ten days. So even if you move into a clean vacant apartment you still might inherit the previous residents problems. The actual bite can usually be recognized by the impulse to scratch the area as much as an hour after the feeding. They will usually be indistinguishable from mosquito bites.
Most of the time, the bite site becomes a red raised bump or flat wet that usually itches. It might not even become visible for as much as nine days. Many people wrongly attribute bedbug infestations to bad hygiene or a filthy apartment but this is not true. They are attracted to body heat and carbon dioxide from the human body. While a dirty home may give them more places to hide, it doesn’t cause the infestation.
People who are bitten generally get anxious and respond with stress and insomnia. Because of the widespread erroneous belief that having bedbugs means that you have a dirty home, people often fail to report the problem until it is a full fledged infestation. This is not true and the longer amount of time that goes by the larger the infestation can become.
