Bed Bugs – How Do You Get Rid of Them?
Bed bugs are becoming a nuisance around the world. Once thought eliminated because of the chemical DDT, they are currently staging a comeback.
They are becoming an increasing problem in homes, hotels, apartments, condos, dorms and motels.
Attracted by the warmth and carbon dioxide emanating from the human body they can travel quite a distance to find their next meal.
Bed bugs use two small tubes to puncture the skin of their victims. One tube releases an anti-coagulant while the other sucks out blood. They feed this way every five to seven days.
Bedbugs have adapted in several ways:
- First is their size, less than 1/4 of an inch and flat, which allows them to get through very small openings between rooms and to easily hide from detection.
- The second adaption is how often they need to feed. They can lie dormant for as long as a year waiting for their next victim to come along.
- The third is a resistance to normal insecticides.
It is thought that some of the reasons for the return of the bedbug is the changing way that exterminators are using chemicals, increased world travel and the ease that bed bugs can travel.
Because the pest is only recently reappearing in industrial countries, many exterminators don’t know how to treat them and use methods that are ineffective.
To get rid of bedbugs an organized plan is required. All units around the affected apartment or condo should also be treated.
Since this is not always an option, the bed bug simply moves to safer territory until the treatment stops when they can return so a long term plan is required.
Make sure that you or your pest exterminator are well versed in bed bug treatments. There is no evidence that sprays affect the eggs that are laid so in two weeks when they hatch the bugs could be back and re-infest your home.
A well though out program over whatever time is needed will be required to exterminate your bedbugs.
